Bios from ExxonMobil Engineers:

Bob Barter – Section Head, Environmental Sciences.
Bob holds a Bachelors of Science (BS) in Zoology and a Bachelor of Art in Chemistry from Miami University, located in Oxford, Ohio. Bob obtained a Ph.D. in toxicology from the Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Therapeutics at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Bob has always been fascinated by biology, particularly focusing on how living systems work and what can cause the systems to not work. Chemicals in the environment can definitely affect animals and plants. In his job at ExxonMobil, he looks at how products from refineries and chemical plants, can affect living organisms, particularly humans. Sometimes that science information is used to help ensure that chemicals are used safely by people, either workers or consumers. In other cases, Bob uses science to make sure that regulations and company procedures are appropriate to ensure safe use of chemicals. Bob uses his understanding of biology, chemistry and toxicology in interactions with engineers and chemists in the corporation on a daily basis. Additionally, he has to understand enough about other fields of science to ensure his knowledge in toxicology can be useful to scientist developing new products and processes.



Yi Du -- Senior Scientist.
Yi joined ExxonMobil in February 2011 after finishing a two year postdoctoral assignment at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Prior to MIT, Yi obtained her BS in Chemistry from University of Science and Technology of China, and her doctorate (Ph.D.) in Chemistry from University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. At ExxonMobil, Yi has been working on making new materials for separations and catalysis. When crude oil or natural gas is recovered from the ground, many further steps are involved to purify them (separations) or upgrade them to more valuable products (catalysis). While engineers work on the process upgrading, chemists are using chemical reactions to lower the energy barrier from starting materials to final products. New materials often need to have a high surface area, high activity and good stability. To achieve all of this, Yi often needs to work on advanced characterization and testing units to understand the new materials and improve the synthesis afterwards.



Béatrice Gooding -- Advanced Research Associate.
Béatrice was born and educated in France. She graduated from the Ecole Supérieure de Chimie Organique et Minérale. After receiving her Ph.D. at the Institut de Recherche sur la Catalyse (IRC) in Lyon, France, she spent 18 months in the United States as a Postdoctoral fellow in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Back in France, she joined the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), a French National Lab in Mulhouse. There, a collaboration with the company Elf Atochem led to the discovery of a new form of zeolite catalyst, and she temporarily moved to the Elf Atochem research site to work on the catalyst scale up, to learn how to make it in large quantities. She then moved to the United States and has been working for ExxonMobil since 2002. Béatrice works to understand how the refinery units change the composition of the crude oil, to make the best use of all the molecules contained in the crude. With the help of other experts, she uses analytical techniques to identify the molecules and their changes to maximize the effectiveness of the process. She also tries to relate chemical composition to performance, so that ExxonMobil continues to make good products such as Mobil 1, our flagship engine oil. Béatrice and her husband (who is also a chemist!) both enjoy outdoor activities, planting and caring for trees, shrubs and flowers and growing salads and tomatoes.




Jean Grabowski - Senior Research Technician.
Jean holds BS Chemistry (Organic) and MAT in Education (secondary school Chemistry education) from University of Pittsburgh and, in 2013, received an MS in Chemistry (Physical/Analytical Chemistry) from Lehigh University. Jean is trying to develop new capabilities of Atomic Force Microscopy (very high resolution microscopy*) for the analysis of various materials (like polymers, rocks, steel). Jean is originally from Nanticoke, Pennsylvania and likes to watch and play sports. She is also learning how to play the guitar.

*Microscopy is the technical field of using microscopes to view samples and
objects that cannot be seen with the unaided eye


Jason Kim – Senior Engineer.
Jason holds a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Arizona. At ExxonMobil, Jason develops and supports computer software for the laboratories and pilot plants at the Clinton Technology Center, using a combined knowledge of chemical engineering and computer programming to deliver solutions. Having good and reliable data is very important at every stage of conducting proper research. Today, data is available everywhere, but having huge amounts of data can be intimidating, which sometimes could lead to faulty analysis and conclusions! As part of the Informatics team, Jason helps researchers and technicians manage their data to minimize losses and keep their operations running smoothly.
